No Building on Cunninghams Reach

This web site is about Lane Cove Council's consideration of an outrageous alienation of public waterside park land on Cunningham's Reach on the Lane Cove River.

Sydney University is proposing to build a 1,380 square metre 60 metre long 10.6 metres high $3.3M boat shed and club facility principally for the use of 30 rowers from Sydney University Boat Club taking over our beautiful waterside park.

Understanding this would be a contentious proposal the Lane Cove Council have tried to keep this development under the radar of public scrutiny. They have only advised just a few people (21 households in total) who live next to the proposed development in Lane Cove and none of the people just across the River in Hunters Hill. We are doing the job that the Lane Cove Council should have done and made their community aware of this outrageous proposal.

As well this web site provides public information on the development and tries to counter the one sided documentation and argument which has been placed before the Council.

We are supportive of rowing and understand the important contribution Sydney University Rowing is making, at the elite level, to the sport. Nothing however justifies the takeover of this beautiful waterside park, which this proposed development represents.

This huge $3.3M clubhouse, principally for the use of 30 elite rowers will, alienate for ever over 60% of this park. It would leave a usable park less than one third of the size of a football field for the large number of local people and visitors from all over Sydney who come to picnic, walk their dogs, fish, and just generally enjoy this space.

There are many alternative sites in Lane Cove and nearby which could be used for this facility and do not involve the takeover of a popular treelined waterside park.

Most recently new property management at Sydney University have  looked at site options. They looked at 19, short listed 3 and now advise (30th November 2011)  that they will be seeking approval to re-build on their old site at Burns Bay.
