A sample of comments in support of Sydney University re-building on Linley Point Reserve Burns Bay - December 2011
Am
highly delighted at this news, & congratulate - & thank -
Robyn, Noel, Shaun & all who've never thrown in the battle.Apologies
to any recipients of this if you get Robyn's newsletters direct - but
good news is worth risk of double receipt? With only 3 sites under
consideration, I find it hard to visualise that Hilton "boat shed" at
Blackman Park, backing previous site at Linley Pt seems a no-brainer.Absolutely! We support the rebuilding on the old Burns Bay site, Linley Point. That would be brilliant. That
is good news. I have always thought that rebuilding on the Burns Bay
site was the best solution, even it means losing a bit more of that
park for better access. It beats destroying a whole new park! So I am
happy to voice my support for the Burns Bay site in whatever way helps. It's
a little disappointing that the CR site still made the short list, and,
in my opinion, even worse that Blackman Park is on it too. I would
strongly oppose a development plan for Blackman Park for the same
reasons as CR, plus some others! Thanks again
for all your hard work, Robyn, and for keeping us up to date. Let me
know if there is anything I can do to help with supporting the Burns
Bay option at this time.Great news that re-building on the original site was considered the best option.I think most local residents would support this. However
improved access from Burns Bay Rd should be part or the development,
and the size of the proposed shed should be similar to the original one. Some very good news at last, and thanks for keeping us informed.Thank
you so much for the time and effort you are putting in to this.
It's enormously appreciated. Let's hope the university builds on
the old site - it just makes sense! What a load off the heart and mind.Great news 99! Let's get behind the original site option big time! Last
year I did write to the Council suggesting that the original Burns Bay
(Linley Point) site be used by the University, and that the Council
allow them to use some existing ground south of the burnt out shed.
This part of the reserve is not suitable for recreation as it is both
narrow and because it is impacted directly by the constant Burns Bay
Road traffic noise.I would that suggest that
the FOCRs approach Lane Cove Council formally to support the use of
their old site site by the University. I fear they might have another
go at Cunninghams Reach if they get a refusal for their old site!Congratulations on a wonderful job in saving Cunninghams Reach...thousands of Sydneysiders will thank you over the years.Great News Robyn. Thank you and all the team involved for all your efforts. That seems to be the perfect outcome. Very good work all round. Certainly seems to warrant a celebratory tipple. At
the old site is what we're looking for isn't it? We should support them
otherwise we'll be seen as unreasonable, can't have boatshed at
Cunningham's Reach, can't have it at the old site....
Issues raised on building on Linley Point Reserve Burns Bay
Now
that CR seems to be out of danger, I would hope that FOCR can continue
to work to ensure that any development of Linley Reserve respects the
integrity of the park. We do not want to lose the park to
overdeveopment of a rowing shed or car park. While not strictly part of
Linley Point, many Linley Point residents enjoy walking through and
enjoying it. I note that the University wants FOCR support and I would
encorage FOCR in this respect. I would be happy to participate.Vehicle
access (most especially with the long rowing trailers they have) will
be very dangerous (as it was before)- both for the rowers as well
motorists (especially local residents) as they have to cope on busy
Burns Bay Road as these vehicles entering and leaving the very
difficult, tight entrances to the park. At least access into CR was
quite safe.If
they build anything bigger than they had before, then this firstly take
up land space (whereas before it was only "over the water"
space). There will have to be more allocated parking space set
aside, and, if the uni opts for added facilities as they were for CR
(e.g. cafe/restaurant/function facilities), then this will
inconvenience not only the immediate neighbours, but the whole of Burns
Bay plus Riverview residents (sound travels loudly across water - we
"share" many of the Riverview parties late at night). At CR there would
have been no sound/disturbance as there were no neighbours within
earshot and very few across the water in Hunters Hill. Also
if they return to Burns Bay, there will be the occasional inconvenience
as they park their long trailers in the first part of View St -
especially on regatta days. This makes it all very
inconvenient for us as we try to get access into and out of Linley
Point. I never envisaged this being a problem if CR was the preferred
location.Of
course this little quaint park (constantly used by local dog walkers,
runners, kids & parents using the swings, kicking a football, etc)
will also further disappear in a few more years as they start
redeveloping all of those light industrial/commercial/bowling green
sites around Carisbrook house. This little park will be totally
overshadowed by these future multi dwelling complexe.
Combine that effect, along with the landspace soaked up by the new
rowing shed, and we will all but loose our little strip of nature's
wonderland.Personally
I actually love the sound of rowers (even at 5am) in the mornings on
Burns Bay .. I feel part of a water based community. The rowers used to
come and go very quietly and were very respectful of the
space. However I believe any new rowing facilities are going to
be the death knell for this little strip of original bushland. My vote would be for Blackman's park - easy access, plenty of parking space, only a few neighbours etc.
