Profile Graham Goodwin

Education
Born in Broken Hill (out west) and educated at Broken Hill High School. After EE Degree, I stayed on to do Ph.D. at UNSW.

Career and Work
In 1970, went to London to lecture at Imperial College – caught up with Geoff and Fran Poulton in London. Returned to Australia (Newcastle) in 1974 where I have been ever since. Had a number of positions including Dean of Faculty, Director of Special Research Centre and Federation Fellow.

Family
Married Rosslyn in 1967 and had two children – Andrew (born 1973) and Sarah (born 1975 now married to Mark). Met Rosslyn at Jazz Club in Sydney when she was 16. Now have one grandchild (thanks to Sarah). We all live in Newcastle.

Experiences
Work related experience included becoming Fellow of Royal Society London (signed the same book as Newton) and being elected Foreign Member of Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences. Rosslyn and I travel a lot – most exciting – Spitzbergen (1,000 kms from North Pole – brilliant) and boat trip in Southern Chile (Scorpius – wonderful value).

Interests
Mid life crisis at age 50 led me to buy 3 motorcycles. Have done over 100,000 kms touring Australia. Best trips – Tasmania and back to Broken Hill (5 times).

Doing now and plans
Still working as Research Director at University of Newcastle. No plans to retire at this time. Enjoying life with lots of travel. About to go to Italy, Sweden and USA.
